The game I'm reviewing this time is <No case should remain unsolved>, a Korean indie game by SOMI, the developer famous for <Replica>.
✏ No case should remain unsolved
As the title suggests, <No case should remain unsolved> is a mystery game where a young police officer approaches a retired officer who failed to solve the 'Seowon Missing Persons Case' years ago. The young officer helps the retired officer piece together gragments of memories to finally solve the case.
✏ After 12 years from retirement, that makes sense
Even in my 20s, it can be hard to remember what I had for lunch yesterday. Imagine how much more difficult it'd be after 12 years. The 'Seowon Missing Case' was the last case the retired officer handled before retiring. Unable to solve it, he retired, and 12 years have passed. By the time the game is played, the retired officer is over 70 years old, and his memories of the investigation are jumbled. He might not remember who said what or when they said it. It's up to us, the players, to correctly connect and place these fragmented memories.
In the game, conversation gragments are like puzzle pieces. Just as you can't fit puzzle pieces anywhere, you cannot connect conversation reandomly. Each conversation has hashtags, and you must connect conversations with the same hashtags. Connecting them will generate new speakers or dialogues.
Sometimes, dialogues are locked with pink or purple locks. These are special dialogues that require finding specific comments or numbers (codes) within existing conversations. Without hints other than guides on blogs or YT, you might need to re-examine all previous conversations even though you were just playing game.
✏ Feeling like reading interesting non-fiction
The story is highly immersive, and since the mystery game structure requires you to read the content to solve the puzzles, people who enjoy reading novels will find it fun. On the other hand, the system forces you to 'read', so people who don't like text-heavy games might feel sluggish during gameplay.
The gameplay lasts about 3 hours, which is short enough to finish in one sitting. However, given the busy modern lifestyle, you might leave the game and come back to it later. If you can remeber everything, it's fine, but since I can't do it, I had to review the content from the beginning, making it both easy and difficult to recall the details.
This parts is reminiscent of the non-fiction section of the Korean CSAT. The storyline is highly immersive because it's a mystery game, but the lont texts can make you feel dizzy. You can review the content at any time, but the sheer volume makes it time-consuming, just like non-fiction passages.
📋Overall Review
<No case should remain unsolved> is a detective (mystery) game where you revisit the 'Seowon Missing Case' long after retirement to unravel its mysteries. Missing any details makes it hard to follow, but the game's unique puzzle system allows you to review the content anytime. With multiple endings and a price of just 7,800 won (KRW), it feels like a bargain.
